at university of the pacific
University of the Pacific's International Programs and Services (IPS) presented screenings of six films curated by the San Joaquin Film Society, at the Pacific Theatre on November 24 and 25, 2008, in honor of an annual program called International Education Week (held this year on Nov. 17th to 25th).
This dynamic collection includes six films from the Official Selection of the 2008 San Joaquin International Film Festival in June, many of which have been honored with some of the world's top prizes, accolades and nominations for cinema.
Special thanks to the makers of these films for contributing to this program.

VANAJA
Directed by Rajnesh Domalpalli
Set in rural South India, VANAJA explores the chasm that divides classes as a young 14 year old daughter of fisherman goes to the local Landlady's house to learn Kuchipudi Dance. She is pitched, however, into a tale of class, family and animus from which there is only one escape. A masterpiece, VANAJA is one of the most decorated independent films ever: Winner of Best Debut at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival, and 26 other awards worldwide, and selected at 135 film festivals around the world.

TO TOUCH THE SOUL
Directed by Ryan Goble, Produced by Teresa Hagen
CSULB Professor Carlos Silveira, an artist educator and social activist, wants to bring a sense of joy to impoverished children in Cambodia who are affected by HIV/AIDS. He has recruited 27 American university students, joining him in art to help these children express their wishes and desires for their futures. Winner of 2007 Accolade Award Best of Show and Best Documentary at the 2008 San Joaquin Film Festival.

OVERNIGHT A ROSE

This is a story about Xiao Mei (14) and her grandmother (48) whose relationship is based on lies. Mei searches for love according to her high expectations of what love ‘should be’ in contrast to the immature love that she feels in all her grandmother can give her. Winner of three Epidemic Film Festival Awards and nominated for Best Narrative Short Film at the 2008 San Joaquin Film Festival.
