OUR HISTORY
Since June 2008 with the inauguration of the San Joaquin International Film Festival, the San Joaquin Film Society has presented over 150 screenings.
OUR BEGINNINGS
In December 2006, Cambodia-born, American Sophoan Sorn began the creation of the 1st San Joaquin International Film Festival (SJIFF). The cinematic endeavor inaugurated June 4, 2008 with a Opening Night Gala at Stockton's historic Bob Hope (Fox) Theatre. Championed by civic leaders, the local media, curious filmmakers from around the world and the local community - the festival was a bold success. With an endeavor to carry on the San Joaquin International Film Festival as an annual tradition, to help raise the cultural and global profile of the San Joaquin region, and to foster the arts through a diverse year-round program - the San Joaquin Film Society was founded. In 2009, the new Film Society blossomed with the growth of the 2nd SJIFF, and the addition of the World Cinema Series, which included the San Joaquin Children's Film Festival, Cinema Italia and French Cinema Day. In 2010 and 2011, the Film Society held the third and fourth editions of SJIFF concentrated on two venues, the Stockton Empire Theatre and The State Theatre in Modesto, a city 45 miles south of Stockton. The 5th Anniversary Festival was held January 12-15, 2012 in Stockton.
